Quantifying Wheat Blast Disease Induced Yield and Production Losses of Wheat: A Quasi-Natural Experiment

چکیده

Abstract Applying the difference-in-difference (DID) estimation procedure, this study quantifies wheat blast ( Magnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum) induced losses in yield, quantity of sold, consumed, or stored, as well grain value Bangladesh 2016 following a disease outbreak that affected over 15,000 ha. Estimates show blast-induced yield loss was 540 kg ha −1 on average for households blast-affected districts. Estimated total production approximately 8,205 tons worth USD 2.1 million during outbreak. Based these insights, we discuss need long-term assured investment and concerted research efforts controlling transboundary diseases such blast, including importance weather forecast driven early warning systems dissemination blast-resistant varieties.

Wheat Blast: A New Fungal Inhabitant to Bangladesh Threatening World Wheat Production

World wheat production is now under threat due to the wheat blast outbreak in Bangladesh in early March 2016. This is a new disease in this area, indicating the higher possibility of this pathogen spreading throughout the Asia, the world's largest wheat producing area. Occurrence of this disease caused ~3.5% reduction of the total wheat fields in Bangladesh. Its economic effect on the Banglades...

Take-all of Wheat and Natural Disease Suppression: A Review

In agro-ecosystems worldwide, some of the most important and devastating diseases are caused by soil-borne necrotrophic fungal pathogens, against which crop plants generally lack genetic resistance. However, plants have evolved approaches to protect themselves against pathogens by stimulating and supporting specific groups of beneficial microorganisms that have the ability to protect either by ...

SSM-Wheat: a simulation model for wheat development, growth and yield

A robust crop model can assist in genetic improvement and cultural management of the crop. The objectives of this study were to describe a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) model and to report results of its evaluation. The model simulates phenological development, leaf development and senescence, crop mass production and partitioning, plant nitrogen balance, yield formation and soil water and ...

Raising yield potential in wheat.

Recent advances in crop research have the potential to accelerate genetic gains in wheat, especially if co-ordinated with a breeding perspective. For example, improving photosynthesis by exploiting natural variation in Rubisco's catalytic rate or adopting C(4) metabolism could raise the baseline for yield potential by 50% or more. However, spike fertility must also be improved to permit full ut...
